Dare we say summer is drawing to a close, and it may just be time to start thinking about how to maintain your caravan or motorhome in storage during winter.

Winter can be a harsh season for caravans. As the temperatures drop and the weather becomes unpredictable, storing your caravan is essential to protect it from the elements correctly.

In this blog, we’ll provide valuable tips on storing your caravan during the winter months to ensure it’s in top condition when the warmer weather returns!

Thorough Cleaning:

    • Interior: Clean the interior of your caravan thoroughly. Remove all perishable items, including food, to prevent mould and pests. Wipe down surfaces, vacuum carpets, and open cabinet doors and drawers to allow airflow.
    • Exterior: Wash the exterior to remove dirt and grime. Pay special attention to the roof and awning. A clean surface will help protect against rust and deterioration.
    • Special Cleaning Services: We are pleased to partner with Happy Valet, offering on-site cleaning services. This not only ensures thorough cleaning but also prioritises safety, as we discourage customers from using ladders on-site to clean the roof. For professional cleaning assistance, contact Jonathan at 07398 016637.

Inspect and Repair:

    • Mechanical Components: Have your caravan serviced before winter storage. Check brakes, tires, and all mechanical systems to ensure everything is in good working order. Address any issues promptly.
    • Seals and Windows: Inspect seals around doors, windows, and roof vents. Replace any damaged seals to prevent water infiltration.
    • Propane System: If your caravan has a propane system, turn it off at the source and ensure all appliances are off. Consider having a professional check for leaks before storage.
    • We partner with Liberty Caravan Services to enable customers to have onsite inspections and servicing. You can contact them on 01909 286186 or find them on Facebook.

Winterise the Plumbing:

    • Drain all water tanks, including the fresh water, grey water, and black water tanks.
    • Use antifreeze to protect plumbing lines. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper winterisation.
    • Empty and clean the toilet and holding tank thoroughly.

Battery Care:

    • Disconnect the battery or keep it connected to maintain a full charge if you have a smart charger.
    • Store the battery in a cool, dry place to prevent freezing.

Ventilation:

    • Ensure proper ventilation in your storage space to prevent moisture build-up, which can lead to mould and mildew. Consider using desiccants or moisture-absorbing products inside the caravan.

Tyre Maintenance:

    • Inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure to prevent flat spots.
    • If possible, store your caravan on jack stands to reduce the weight on the tyres.
    • If needed, we allow Hometyres on-site to replace tires, ensuring your caravan remains in top condition throughout its storage period.

Security Measures:

    • Ensure you use wheel and hitch locks.
    • Secure Storage is a CaSSOA Platinum site that offers the highest level awarded to sites and demonstrates superior levels of security we have.

Regular Check-Ins:

    • Even when in storage, check on your caravan periodically to ensure it’s in good condition.
    • Remove the cover and inspect for any signs of damage or moisture build-up.

Documentation:

    • Keep all important documents, including ownership papers, insurance policies, and service records, in a safe place.

Additional Tips:

We stock a range of items for moisture control in the shop at reception, or they can be found online inexpensively.

Regardless of where you get them, always ensure moisture traps are in place during the winter months.

Safety Alert:

Display an LPG sticker in the gas location to help the fire service locate the LPG in case of an emergency.

Stickers are available free of charge from reception. Just pop in and ask for one.

Proper winter storage is paramount to preserve the condition and value of your caravan. By adhering to these tips and considering professional cleaning services provided by Happy Valet, alongside Liberty Caravan Services for inspections and servicing, you can rest assured that your caravan will emerge from its winter respite in impeccable shape, ready for your next adventure when the warmer months arrive.
