With summer holidays on the horizon and spring breaks already underway, we wanted to share some of our tips on staying safe when travelling with your caravan.

Ensure your contents are secure to ensure you have your fire protection installed. These vital steps will ensure you travel safely and remove that worry from your to-do list!

Last month we shared our ‘top tips to getting your caravan ready for spring’, so hopefully, you’re halfway there with the preparation of your caravan. But when it comes to safety, no corners can be cut!

Keeping your caravan contents safe

Not all thieves are looking for a sparkly new caravan; they want all the goodies inside it! Caravans are targeted for break-ins because people are generally too relaxed about security when on holiday and leaving doors unlocked. The obvious advice is to ensure you lock your caravan whenever you leave it – even if you are nipping to the shower block! Extra locks are also recommended – and don’t forget your windows!

Hitch locks can be stolen!

It might seem a little far fetched to think that a thief will steal your whole caravan, but thieves are far fetched and ruthless – it happens! We all want to make it as easy as possible to hitch and unhitch our caravans, but this doesn’t work in our favour when someone is trying to steal the caravan! Hitch locks simply fit into your caravan’s tow ball socket, making it impossible for anything to hitch up to your caravan.

Be friendly and introduce yourself

Introducing yourself to people on the campsite. It can help to deter potential thieves. Or why not arrange to go away with friends or family and pitch up next to each other? Then there’s always someone to watch over your goods when you venture off-site.

Smoke alarms and fire precautions

Having a working smoke alarm in your caravan or motorhome is as important as having one at home! You check your batteries in your home and ensure the alarm is working; same for the caravan or motorhome. If you smoke, use metal ashtrays. Turn off all your appliances before leaving the caravan or go to bed. Never use a cooker or heater while your caravan is moving.

If there’s a fire in your caravan, get everyone out straight away and call the fire service, give your location with a map reference, or provide a nearby landmark like a farm. More recently, the emergency services advised you to use what3words.

Summary

Travelling with your temporary home behind you is what we all love. Following these few tips can ensure you can fulfil your trip with minimal disruption.
